Plants to Boost Your Productivity for the Office
Looking for the best plants for the office? You can boost your productivity — and your overall health — by growing some of these popular options. Whether you work from a home office (check out our top DIY ideas here if you’re looking to revamp your home office space) or spend your day in a large shared office space, workspaces with plants can be much healthier and more enjoyable places to be.
1. Aloe
It’s not just for treating sunburn. Cactus plants are great for offices because they thrive under the watchful eye of a forgetful gardener. They require minimal water and look attractive on any desk space. They may look like they have sharp teeth, but don’t worry — these spines are harmless. One caveat you should be aware of when growing cactus is its need for bright light. If you place your succulent near a sunny window, you can more or less forget about it.
2. Peace Lilies
Perfect for busy workers. They can handle low to medium light and only need to be watered once a month. They do better than other office plants when it comes to cold, dry conditions.
3. Snake Plants
Sansevieria, often referred to as mother-in-law’s tongue, will continue to grow after the owner has passed away and lived for decades or more. Choose a cultivar that grows in a dwarf style, as there are some snake plants that can grow to be several feet tall. Some good options include ‘Whitney’ or ‘Futura Superba.’ They require minimal care – just occasional watering.
4. English Ivy
Ivy is a trailing plant that looks attractive against the harsh lines of a desk. These plants need average amounts of water and light to thrive. Good options to grow include ‘Curly Locks,’ which has curly, elegant-looking leaves, and ‘Silver Dollar,’ a silver-colored option. If your ivy stems grow too long, you can always tie them around a trellis.
5. Aglaonema
It has beautiful, colorful leaves with white and green spots. This attractive plant only needs to be watered once a week and is easy to care for.
6. Bonsai
Not technically a plant, but a style of growing plants that are adapted to an office environment. Some bonsai plants can be finicky, requiring regular pruning, training, and fertilizing, but they provide a lot of interest and are long-lived - they will help you retire, that's for sure!
7. Spider Plant
This is one that thrives in adverse conditions. It can be grown on a desktop or as a hanging plant. It is able to withstand all types of air pollutants, from carbon monoxide to formaldehyde, making it a good choice in an industrial office. However, it is best known for the hand-me-down shoots of its offspring, which give them a unique "spider-like" appearance and can be used to propagate new plants.
